What's Changing... and Why It Matters
The U.S. is entering a new era of cash with one of the most historic currency refreshes. The Catalyst Series will introduce advanced security features and accessibility enhancements across most denominations starting in 2026. This multi-year initiative is designed to protect commerce, deter counterfeiting, and maintain confidence in U.S. cash worldwide as well as provide for the first time accessibility features for the visually impaired.
For businesses that rely on cash transactions (retailers, gaming operators, vending companies, transport operators, and financial institutions to name just a few) the redesign means more than notes that look new and different. It means you will need to plan ahead to ensure every device, every system, and every process is ready.
What this means for you
- Device software updates (and in some cases hardware) across validators, recyclers, counters, kiosks, self‑checkout, and ATMs.
- Operational changes: staff training, SOP updates, currency authentication, and counterfeit‑response workflows.
- Accessibility: the first redesigned note is planned to include a raised tactile features to aid in note identification for the visually impaired.
