Marcel Herz, CEO and co-founder of Tiliter, shared insights into artificial intelligence's transformative role in retail during a recent episode of the CPI ThoughtCast series. Strategic Marketing Director for Retail, Rob Blythin, hosted the enlightening discussion at EuroCIS 2024, focusing on Tiliter's pioneering use of computer vision in retail operations.
"Our mission at Tiliter aimed to bring computer vision's practical applications to the retail sector, starting with the overlooked yet fundamental task of identifying fruits and vegetables at self-service checkouts," said Herz.
Herz's journey to founding Tiliter seven years ago in Australia stemmed from his studies in biomedical engineering, where he first recognized computer vision's potential. Moving beyond its medical applications, he and his co-founder saw an opportunity to benefit the retail industry significantly.
"By automating item identification, our AI technology not only accelerates the checkout process but also drastically reduces fraud and loss," Herz emphasized, outlining the dual advantages of their system.
A partnership with Woolworths, the largest retailer in the APAC region, served as a testament to Tiliter's impact. Implementing AI software across over 900 stores, the project showcased how AI can enhance various facets of retail operations, from Scan & Go to e-commerce and convenience pricing.
Reflecting on the expansion plans, Herz shared, "As we grow from our roots in Australia into Europe, and eventually the US, our focus remains on leveraging clean data and scalable AI technology. This ensures our solutions are not just revolutionary for today but adaptable for the retail landscape of tomorrow."
Looking ahead, Herz is excited about the potential for technology to further refine the shopping experience, citing advancements like smart glasses and VR as avenues for future exploration. However, he was adamant that the essence of retail innovation extends beyond technology. "It's about differentiation and providing value that transcends technology," he affirmed.
Rob Blythin echoed Herz's sentiments, emphasizing the importance of discussions like these in understanding the evolving retail landscape. "Our CPI ThoughtCast series aims to bring forward thinkers like Marcel to the forefront, offering our audience insights into the future of retail."
To Marcel Herz, the successes at Tiliter not only serve as a beacon for retail innovation, but also as an invitation to the industry to envision the potential of AI in enhancing customer experiences. As they continue to pave the way, their journey offers a glimpse into a future where retail operations are seamlessly integrated with cutting-edge technology.
